The Equation/Jams

Batalo East turns up the volume in Kampala the last Saturday of every month at the CICP space in the National Theatre. Just above the main entrance to the theatre, show your skills, or come to just feel the groove and learn some new moves! The Equation consists of:

Traditional and Hip Hop Dance Workshop: Qualified traditional dancers and instrumentalists teach a different Ugandan dance each month, encouraging participants to learn and apply techniques. Targeting the urban dance community, workshops are open to all dancers and interested members of the public, particularly youth. Workshops are from 3 – 4:30 PM, followed by an opportunity to apply these new styles and skills to a traditional cypher.

Dance Discussion and Screening: A dialogue and clip screening, follows the workshop, led by an invited urban or traditional dancer from Uganda or abroad, addressing how to merge traditional and urban dance, technique, personal and professional experience.

Traditional/Urban Jam: Afro-fusion music mixed for all participants to explore and experiment individually and through the format of a dance circle or ‘cypher’

Water will be available for sale, as well as Urban Market attire, so come for the day, and keep your eye on Batalo on Twitter and Facebook for updates.

All styles and skill levels are very welcome – all that is required is clean footwear, comfortable clothing and a bottle of water! Please remember that all Batalo East events are positive spaces – keep it clean with the messages you bring, including appropriate clothing and a good attitude!
